Issue with Moodle LTI assignment
03 March 2026, 21:18
Hi all
Moodle Version - 4.5.8
Mahara version - 25.04.4
The majority of teachers (around 150) use an “unlocked” assignment submission system. They ask students to submit a page or collection at the beginning of the year: this allows them to monitor the progress of ePortfolios from time to time and provide students with formative feedback on an ad hoc basis.
Since the new version, Moodle/Mahara work in strange ways till the last version with the LTI plugin : when a teacher selects "No" to unlock the selected page or collection, Moodle behaves as if the page were locked: Moodle creates a copy of the portfolio, and the submitted page or collection mentions "submitted at [date and time]."
On the student's side in Moodle:
- Even if the teacher grades the ePortfolio, it retains the "submitted at..." label when the student tries to access it again via Moodle.
- If the student attempts to "Edit the submitted work," the dropdown menu that previously allowed selecting the ePortfolio no longer appears (the name of the previously submitted ePortfolio only appears at the bottom of the list), leading some students to believe they haven’t yet chosen a page or collection.
On the student's side in Mahara:
- They find their ePortfolio in the "Portfolios" section.
- The page or collection submitted in Moodle appears in the "Shared by me" menu.
We have also removed the 'old' mnet submission plugin.
Will the upcoming version fix this issue or do you recommend another method for monitoring the progress of ePortfolios?
Thank you so much in advance if you have more information!
Best regards,
Yannick

Hi Yannick,
The issue of the option 'No' for locking a portfolio was fixed mid-2025 thanks to funding from the University of Bath and is available in the latest Moodle plugin code. This allows students to submit their portfolios without them being locked and thus no copy is made. Can you please make sure to use the latest plugin code? If you are, please provide the steps to replicate the issue. A screenrecording might be best that shows everything including the assignment setup.
As far as the 'Shared by me' menu goes, every portfolio is shown there, no matter of its status. Even when a portfolio is submitted, you can still share it with others on Mahara itself.
Thank you
Kristina

Hello Kristina,
Thank you for your help.
We will try using the latest version of the Moodle plugin, and I will let you know if it works.
Best regards,
Yannick
