Is there a free Mahara not linked to an institution

Kia ora
I have exported my Mahara eportfolio as a Leap2a from an institution that was supporting my Mahara experience since about 2012. They are no longer using Mahara and asked all users to skadaddle.
I am between assignments on a sort of sabbatical and would like to check my "very large" eportfolio is in tact. Therefore I am not or may not in the future be aligned to an institution using Mahara.
I would like to know if there are any public Mahara installations I can import my eportfolio into to continue my Mahara experience. The Demo site appears to be unable to take the massive content.
If this is not available publicly then which other eportfolio platform would forum users recommend that is free and supported?
Cheers.

Hi Eric,
I'm sorry to hear that your institution is no longer supporting Mahara. There are a couple of sites that run an old version of Mahara to which individuals can sign up. We had looked into setting up a software-as-a-service site for individuals, but haven't yet progressed on that idea for a few reasons, amongst them one of how to finance the site and provide support. A fully free site would attract spammers fairly quickly and would also not pay for the costs associated with running such a service.
Then it comes down to the question of how much would someone be willing to pay on an annual basis to have their Mahara portfolios available and shareable?
Cheers
Kristina
