When administrating the Mahara site always new tabs get opened up. Though this might be useful when having several institutions and you like to open up those in different tabs that also coudl be achieved by pressing control and clicking on the link or on MAC on the Commad key. But opening up every time a new Tab when a new page gets opened creates a total mess for administrators and easily you even might overwrite data from the same TAB that had been already opened up previously.
That is how it looks like in Chrome or Firefox

Hi Andi,

Can you please provide more info? I don't know where this happens for you on the site. Links to the site itself don't open in a new tab or window. Only links to external content open automatically in a new tab or window.
