Hi,

I can't seem to find the specifications for the roles you can choose.

Could someone help me specify them?

There are two sets of roles:

sharing

- no special role

- manager

- peer

- peer and manager

- reviewer

and site roles

- user

- institution site staff

- institution admin

- site admin

Hi Emelie,

Mahara has an extensive permissions framework that consists of several layers or roles that come into effect depending on the context.

Site level permissions

  • Site administrators: They have super powers and can work across institutions and doesn't have to be an institution member to access institution settings. They can also administer all the plugins installed on the site and can force certain settings to be used for all institutions. They can masquerade as any account holder on the site.
  • Site staff: They have staff permissions across the site and institutions. They have elevated permissions from account holders and can, for example, set up controlled groups, decide whether submissions are allowed in the group, always see the real name besides any display name, and may have access to reports, and assess SmartEvidence collections.
  • Account holders: Anybody who doesn't have either site staff or site admin permissions and is not in an institution. They can create portfolios and participate in groups and may create groups, depending on the site settings.

Institution level permissions

  • Institution administrators: They administer an institution on the site and can change certain institution settings, create institution wide content, and masquerade as any member in their institution for which they are an administrator.
  • Institution staff: They have elevated permissions from account holders and can, for example, set up controlled groups, decide whether submissions are allowed in the group, always see the real name besides any display name, and may have access to reports for the institution in which they have staff permissions, and assess SmartEvidence collections.
  • Institution members: Anybody who doesn't have institution staff or administrator permissions and is a member of the institution.

Group level permissions

  • Group administrators: They can change the settings of a group. Depending on their institution or site level permissions, they may create controlled groups, decide whether submissions are allowed, and can see group-related reports.
  • Group tutors: They have group administrator permissions without being able to change group settings and anything else that the group administrator reserves for their role.
  • Group member: Regular account holder who has access to the group.

Sharing permissions

Usually, people don't need special permissions when they have a portfolio shared. There are certain cases though when special permissions are necessary.

  • Peer: This permission is granted to the person who shall provide feedback on the 'Peer assessment' block.
  • Manager: An account holder would need this extra permission if they shall be able to verify a portfolio page in the 'Sign-off' block.
  • Peer and manager: A combination of the two.
  • Reviewer: This permission can be given to someone if the verification block on the 'Portfolio completion' page (Mahara 21.04 onwards) shall only be filled in with someone who has that permission but not anybody else who has access to the portfolio. Other roles can also be selected to make it more flexible.

I will add those things into the manual.

Hope that helps.

Kristina
