embedly plugin
03 May 2017, 10:04
Hi everyone.
One way to continue to use Embed.yl is to go to their "Create free Card" at https://embed.ly/code then paste the desired URL address and customize embed code. Then copy that code and embed it into Mahara block on page. Tested on demo.mahara.org and it works. No need for API key... Will have a look into code when I'll have some more time.
Hope that helps for now.
Cheers, Gregor

Hi Meg,
Cecilia investigated the implementation of embedly in Mahara core and we don't make use of the API. As Gregor mentioned, the cards still work. So if you don't use the plugin or can switch from the plugin to Mahara core, you should be fine.

As I see it, I think that the "Create a free card" option at Embed.ly is no longer available.
I am happy to be corrected!

Hi Richard,
Thank you for alerting us to this. Indeed, it looks like that you now also need to pay for Embedly cards. We will need to think about what to do now. I see two options:
- Remove the Embedly integration
- Make it optional for those sites that have a subscription
My preference at this stage would be option 1 as we wouldn't know what changes there might still be that we would need to make in order to continue to support Embedly. It would be better for it to be a third-party plugin that can be maintained by those that do want to use this service rather than something we maintain in the core project. This is already the case with some other plugins such as the block storage plugin for AWS and Microsoft Azure.
I created a tracker item so we don't lose sight for making a decision.
Thank you
Kristina

I was afraid this would happen... not surprised though. I had the idea a few years ago to use a self hosted iframely api to do the same thing: https://github.com/itteco/iframely
I did a little more looking around and found that microlink.io is a similar service and they have code for their scraper and cards: https://github.com/microlinkhq
Support for using oembed in link previews would be a simple fix in the meantime. I think it would be worth looking at how Wordpress goes about handling embedding links as well: https://wordpress.org/support/article/embeds/
This is a feature that I think is invaluable for an eportfolio.

Hi Patric,
Yes, proper support for oembed would be great. We've already had a wishlist item for that for a while now but no project sponsor. At the time it was just for video/audio, but if it can do more why not. I linked this forum thread to the wishlist item so we can follow up on ideas more easily.
Cheers
Kristina
