Mahara 16.04 has been released

Hello Mahara users,

We are excited to announce our latest version of Mahara, version 16.04, which we have released today. We'd like to thank everybody who has contributed to this release by reporting, discussing, fixing, developing, and testing patches and new features, translating the interface, and testing the release candidates over the past weeks.

Highlights in Mahara 16.04 include:

  • Embed internal video and audio via HTML5-based media player
  • Display Open Badges in a block
  • Embed content via Embedly

Other notable new features include:

  • Choose tags via a select box
  • Embed OGA and OGV media files
  • Style guide for developers
  • Send wall post notifications via email
  • Scale internal videos, and images in text entries automatically

Supported releases

Both Mahara 15.04 and 15.10 are still supported for security updates. The support for Mahara 15.10 will end with the release of the next version in April 2017, and the support for Mahara 15.04 will end in October 2017. Since the 15.04 release is the last one before moving to Bootstrap, we extended the support for it to 2.5 years instead of the usual 1.5 years to give institutions more time to upgrade if they have a lot of customizations.

If you are running a Mahara site lower than 15.04, we highly recommend you upgrade to 16.04 to receive security updates. Users of Mahara 15.04 and 15.10 can stay on their versions until that support runs out. Mahara 1.10 will receive one more minor version update.
