we are currently using v1.7 Last year we backed up student eportfolios as html as we were migrating our site to Moodlerooms. One of our tutors would now like to have access to some of the backed up eportfolios but of course some of the users dfrom last year have gone. Is there a way we can restore from the html file some of the eportfolios in a mahara group for this tutor? if not, how would you suggest we make them available to him?

Hello Teresa,

I'm afraid it's not possible to restore a portfolio from an HTML file as Mahara cannot understand its structure to create the proper elements. That's why we have the Leap2A export.

You cannot uncompress the HTML zip file on Mahara because the links between the individual files won't work.

Since you do have backups, why not just give the tutor the HTML version so they can uncompress that and open it on their computers without Mahara?

Cheers

Kristina

Thanks for getting back on this Kristina. On closer inspection we found the originals were still in mahara so we were able to change the sharing settings so the tutor could see them (luckily there were only 11 of them).

We still need better ways of archiving submitted work for compliance with university requirements for all work submitted as part of credit bearing assessments. We found Leap2 a bit flaky. It would be good to have a mahara storage area of some sort where the submitted work could be archived in case it is required for review.

Some students may well wish to continue to use mahara beyond their time with us too so I would be grateful for any advice of available networks they could join and take their work with them.

Hello Teresa,

Great that you could find the originals still on your environment. In Mahara 1.10 we implemented the automatic archiving of submitted portfolios as Leap2A files on the server. See http://manual.mahara.org/en/1.10/administration/groups.html#new-in-mahara-1-10-archived-submissions

Making the archive would mean that any submitted portfolio is archived automatically before the portfolio is released back to the students. That way these pages could be imported again if needed or reviewed at a later stage in a new account.

What did you find flaky about Leap2A?

If you wanted a live archive, a new user account would need to be set up and the portfolio copied in there. Maintaining that would be quite labor intensive.

As for a site where students can store their portfolios after graduation, please see the thread over at https://mahara.org/interaction/forum/topic.php?id=2279&offset=0&limit=10#post27912 and Dirk's post from 4 December 2014.

Cheers

Kristina

Many thanks for this helpful information Kristina. We will be upgrading to Mahra 1.9.3 at the emd of this month and I will discuss the benefits of v1.10 with Moodlerooms.

I will ask our tech support for more info about Leap2 and let you know.

Hello Teresa

You could try FolioSpaces.org, which has provided free Mahara hosting since 2008. Currently 2GB free storage, free imports, free institutional hosting available.

FolioSpaces.com was sold in 2012 and closed down by the new owners shortly after.
