Adding External Videos
18 May 2014, 5:11
Hi All,
First time poster to try and solve a problem I'm having when trying to add a YouTube video to my page. I can get the URL and past it into the correct box etc. but it doesn't show up in either edit mode or general view. All I have under the block title is blank space- exactly where the video should be. Anyone have any thoughts? I have taken the URL from the 'share' option on YouTube as advised but still no good.
Cheers

I have posted a direct link to my video so it is accessible to any viewers of my page but I've been wondering, is there a max file size?
The video is around 3GB- but it's on YouTube so it should work, shouldn't it? I know there is a maximum file size for embedding- hence why I didn't use that option.

Hi Nicholas,
could it be that the mahara, you're posting on, is running on http secure (does the url start with https)? In that case, your browser probably blocks iframe sources from non-https sites. Try changing the http in the url to https in the youtube-url.
Also on older installations, mahara doesn't recognize embed codes that are missing the http(s), so you have to add this into the src="//www.youtube.com/..." part, right after the opening quotes.
And if all that doesn't help, check if youtube is allowed as iframe source (see if one of the youtube-icons is among the ones in the configuration of the external video block element), though by default it is.
Cheers

Hi,
Many thanks for the reply.
Yes the URL does start with an 'S'- but so does the YouTube URL at present.
There is a YouTube icon in the configuration option for the external media block.
I'm still unsure of the problem. YouTube media is allowed and the URL of both Mahara and YouTube begins with the 'S'.
I wonder if it's worth noting I have an insitutionalised version of Mahara- for a university and maybe it's different...

Hi Nicholas,
I'm running out of ideas. The institutions don't have anything to do with the allowed iframe sources and actually, if you see the box for the iframe, it seems that it's not a mahara-issue but something browser-specific. You could try with another browser and besides post the version, your mahara is running on and the embed-code, you are trying to display.

Not sure what will solve this issue but I thank you for your replies.
Cheers.

Oh too bad. The user account is now deleted. It would have been good to have the URL of the video to try in another Mahara instance and see if we can get it to work.
