In the old wiki I saw that Mahara used to have Captchas to prevent spam-registrations.

In the newer documentations I have not been able to find a reference to that. Has it been removed in versions 18.x (or higher)? How can I integrate rechaptcha into Mahara 1.8.1?

Yes, Mahara's CAPTCHA system was removed a few versions back. But I've added it back in (specifically support for reCAPTCHA) into the beta version of Mahara 1.9. ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/mahara/+bug/1252098 )

The final release of 1.9 should be out in a few weeks, so if you upgrade then, you'll have reCAPTCHA support.

If you're somewhat technically inclined, it would also be possible to backport this customization to Mahara 1.8. We're currently using it here on mahara.org, which is a Mahara 1.8 instance.
