Might anyone enlighten me if using Mahara to display badges from Moodle has a place on the Mahara roadmap?

If not might it be a good idea to add it to the feature tracker?

Does anyone know of any work going on that is developing this potentially awesome feature?

Many thanks as always

HI Gideon, the only way I know is via the backpack using the new Mahara Badge plugin.

Do you see issues with that for your students? Privacy? Complexity?

The link to the plugin can be found in the discussion here: https://mahara.org/interaction/forum/topic.php?id=5609&offset=10

Some infor about Moodle (and eventually Mahara) integration are here: https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=197834 - in the posts are also links to github repository with the source code...

A little bit of all three to be honest if you throw in "duplication" as the third issue.

We could set up a backpack for each student and have them manually send the badges earned to it on a regular basis. We could then have the plugin linked to the backpack to let them display the badges on their pages.

As far as I am aware there is no way to create "bulk mozilla backpacks" for an establishment - we already have student emails that can be used to link to them - however I'm always a bit guarded about releasing these to the wild so to speak.

This would also be doubling up the process for no real gain and possibly causing some further admin issues.

Perhaps I should go have a word with mozilla!

1.9 seems a long way off...Frown

Hello Gideon,

Currently, as far as I can tell, Mozilla only has the generic backpack option, but it is not yet possible to have someone else be a backpack as well. So Mahara becoming a backpack really depends on that development work and ideally, we get everything for 1.9, but maybe only after that. Maybe you have a good connection to Mozilla and can find out their plans / timelines and speed things up. ;-)

Cheers

Kristina

Hello Gideon,

It's definitely on the roadmap, and we hope to have a core implementation for Mahara 1.9. We will need to talk to the Totara team and see what their timeline is. For the time being, the plugin from Discendum is a good start. But we haven't yet made a decision on how much of that or if something else would go into core.

Cheers

Kristina

Trying to establish dialogue with company called Digitalme who have a programme aimed mainly at education institutions called "Badge the UK". There are some restrictions placed on Backpack by Mozilla as it is a US company  and there is the COPPA compliance that prevents it being used for under 13s.

I have asked if there are plans to create some sort of walled garden backpack?

Ideally want to link straight to Mahara.

Was hoping there might be some development on the "Badger" Moodle block - http://drcheckers.wordpress.com/2013/01/21/badger-simple-badge-block/

This could be a could compromise...

Got our support company to install the mozilla backpack plugin to our Mahara v1.7.2.

Tried to link it to two different backpacks but keep getting told that no Backpack was found and the backpack address to my profile.

Checked and it is the same one and then added in a new one but still nothing.

Here is what I get: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/7336564/Backpack%20Plugin%20Issues.pdf

Might it be because I am on v1.7.2. Should I upgrade to v1.8?

Any thoughts anyone?

Thanks, Gid
