I have 2 questions about the outstanding new layouts in 1.8.

Firstly, if I create a new (non-default) layout saved for me and I use that layout as a template for others to use and copy, can they use the page if they don't have that layout? Is that layout then automatically added to their layouts?

Secondly, as an admin, is there any way I can add layouts to users defaults (either new and/or existing users)?

Hello Wullie,

You can try this out on the demo site at http://demo.mahara.org if you don't have your own 1.8 instance just yet.

When you copy a page, the layout will be preserved. But there is currently no way of predefining additional layouts on the site / institution level. Could be interesting, but I'm not sure if it might lead to layout overload since you can't give the layouts a name or delete them if you don't want to use them.
