Page skins competition
31 October 2013, 16:17
Hi Kristina & Gregor,
The reason we required the uploading of font files in order to use web fonts like Google's fonts, was to have the font file on the server so that it can be used by PHP when generating the skin preview thumbnails. ImageMagick has to have a local copy of the font in order to use it to generate text in an image.
On the other hand, it has occurred to me since then, that one way around this might be to simply use the PHP curl library to fetch a local copy of the font directly from the font host server.
If we wanted to open this up to end-users, we could include a "legal webfont domains" list, much like the legal iframes domains list.
Cheers,
Aaron

My first skin available at - http://master.dev.mahara.org/user/wullie/refreshers
One comment I have is that the background code overwrites the background colours within the skins selection, so pushes the colour to the bottom. Is this a bug? Should the background colour overwrite the theme? I had to get around it by creating a single colour background image and uploading that.

Link to the Coffee Beans - Sunset skin. Same thing as above except for some tweaks.

First attempt at a skin - after a few glitches along the way!
This one is inspired by Tolkien's Fangorn Forest.

And here's one for Christmas seasonal festive fun. Which is good news because it will nicely compliment the Moodle theme based on the same idea that I'll release for Moodle 2.4 any day now!
First thoughts on skins - a promising addition to Mahara but will take a bit of time to make something polished - these feel a bit rushed. I'll probably develop a version 2 that will cope with multiple themes rather than depending on the default once I've gotten to grips with the CSS section.

This is late, so I understand if it can't be considered for the competition. Really just wanted to share it somewhere folks can use it if they want.

This is the final version of what was developed in the how-to vid - couldn't help tweaking the background image ;)
