Thomas - I can't solve your problem but I can give you some sympathy because I have had and still have this problem at times on a couple of Mahara sites where it says "the file is the wrong type" and I KNOW it is the right type because it uploads perfectly into other Maharas! And once I couldn't upload an mp3 into a Mahara while a colleague in another town managed to upload the same file with no problems to the same Mahara. Have you tried changing browsers? Once I couldn't do it in Internet Explorer or Chrome and it worked in Firefox - or once it was the other way round. I have also posted about this problem on these forums last year with no resolution. It must be either our browser or our computer set up; I can't think of another reason. I also find that the file does upload to the files - it just won't be accepted as a media file when you wish to add it to that block.

Hi Mary,
Thanks for this info. Let's see if we can narrow it down to a browser.

Hello Thomas,
I can play this new file just fine on demo.mahara.org. I uploaded it via Firefox 11 on Ubuntu.
Which browser and its version did you use?

Hi Kristina,
right now I've tested it on two machines.
- Win XP, Firefox 11: No!
- Win XP, InternetExplorer 8: Yes
- Win 7, Firefox 11: Yes
- Win 7, InternetExplorer 9: Yes
The same Firefox release on different plattforms with different results?

Hello Thomas and Mary,
Thank you for digging out your test suite. That's a strange result that it only doesn't work for you in Firefox 11 under Win XP.
Mary: Did you happen to test on Win XP with Firefox 11 as well?
Cheers

I'm not sure I tested it on XP but I will do some tests of my own like Thomas and let you know when I can' do it- I am at the UK Moodle Moot in Dublin at the moment so it might be in a couple of days, but I won't forget I am actually glad someone else has finally found the same problem as me!
