Created an installation guide
26 July 2011, 21:24
Hi,
As part of a college project, I created a detailed installation guide for Mahara along with a set of video tutorials. The guide is targeted to individuals who do not have a lot of technical experience.
I was wondering if anyone hear wanted to review the guide and videos before I actually submit it?
I am putting currently putting the finishing touches on the site and guide.
Thank you so much!
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Tzvi

Hello Tzvi,
Wow. That's a fantastic tutorial for installing Mahara with a minimum of technical knowledge. You should put it on the Mahara wiki as well / link to it there.
A number of users have had problems installing Mahara on shared hosting. Your guide could solve these problems and point them into the direction of what to take care of.
Cheers
Kristina

Hi Kristina,
Thank you for your vote of support (and validating a few weeks of work)! I took your advice and linked the guide to the wiki.
I inserted two lines on this page:
https://wiki.mahara.org/index.php/System_Administrator%27s_Guide/Installing_Mahara
and on this page:
I know the Mahara developers aren't crazy about shared hosting, but personally the guide will be very helpful for individual teachers who want to use Mahara but don't have the resources for dedicated hosting (or the technical expertise to set it up). I have been using shared hosting for a long while now, without a problem. Thus, I hope the guide will empower more teachers to use Mahara with their own students.
Sincerely,
Tzvi

Hello Tzvi,
Thanks for linking your guide in the wiki. I can't really validate your tutorial as I would then have to set up a Mahara site on shared hosting. But I liked your step-by-step instructions. Every hosting provider may work a bit differently so there can be variations, but the videos and the PDF will help to sort out what is needed and how to set everything up.
You are correct when you write that not everybody can get a dedicated server and thus shared hosting is important.
Next time somebody asks about how to set up Mahara on shared hosting, we can refer to your tutorial.
Would you like to share your ideas and experience of using Mahara in the Teaching and Learning with Mahara forum thread?
Cheers
Kristina
