Turns out cron was not running, which I could see for myself thru the admin interface. I've asked for it to be switched on and will look more closely at the threads you've provided if that doesn't clear it up.

Hello Don,

I keep my fingers crossed that everything is resolved once cron is running because the fix was added to Mahara already for a 1.2 release.
