Hi. I was searching around for info if there was support for RSS feed from a mahara site. I found this archived post http://mahara.org/node/254 which says there is none right now. Is that still the case?

If so, I am thinking of using feedburner to make an RSS of a blog in mahara, so I can get it back into a different part of my site (the moodle part).

Is there any other mechism for "sharing" say a blog from one marhara portfolio to another on teh same site, or to the home page for example?

Thanks, Jamie

Hi Jamie,

<Sadly, not at this time. RSS is definitely a feature in the pipes though, for some future release.> That is still the actual stand. The core developer worked hard to deliver Mahara 1.1 and concentrate on the core functions.

In my opinion a rss feed is not a very important essentail tool in an ePortfolio solution. It is a nice addon I can wait for.

I don't know how feedburner works, but if you add an blog in an view with public WWW permission it would be possible to do the job you want.

On the other side Mahara enables you to integrate/collect rss with a block in the view area. I added a rss block in my profil http://mahara.org/user/view.php?id=11

page to watch which twitter feeds deal with special keywords (#mahara #ePortfolio etc.)

The view area is the "sharing" point to show other users what is actual happening. They can put your view on their watchlist and receive notifications if something has happened.

cheers Heinz

Hi Jamie:

I'm now researching how to do this...do you mind telling me how you used feedburner to identify and channel an RSS feed from a Mahara blog?

I've been trying to figure out the status of RSS out in the roadmap for Mahara; can anyone help?

Thanks. This will help my efforts to adapt Mahara  as a platform for community of practice.

RSS is currently (as of 1.3) available for public blogs and forums.

Cheers,

Francois

You need to add a blog post in a view. Then you display the view, you will see something like this, 'Blog title' in 'Name's blog'.

Click the 'Name's blog' then you will see RSS feed icon at the top.

Thanks a lot for this. I'm partway there, but still seem to be missing something.

I've created a blog, published it on a public view, then subscribed to it as an External Block, both directlyin Mahara and via Feedburner...looks a bit weird, but I thought it would be a good test.

If I can make it work, this will be used to stream news updates from community members in my community of practice.

Here is the URL:

http://cws.tdm.info/view/view.php?id=26

Mahara doesn't seem to be updating the feed after the first publish.

In addition, attempts to publish new blocks with the same feeds are stuck at the same stage as the original block.

Am I missing something basic here, or is there a problem with Mahara's RSS in?

EDIT: Looks like its updating now?

Don,

you are not missing anything. I ran into feeds not updating  a while ago and I can't remember what I did to fix it. You can see on this view that it does update the feeds: https://mahara.rockyview.ab.ca/view/view.php?id=3044

I think I either had to delete each feed once and add again or maybe deleting and then adding again srewed it up :) Maybe I will remember in the next few days and the post back.

Hello,

Ages ago that was a cron problem that Richard had fixed. Is that again a cron issue or an issue that goes deeper than that?

Cheers

Kristina

Hi Kristina:

My Mahara is being technically administered by a service provider. Are you suggesting I ask them if cron has been set up properly? I can certainly do that. I like to use this forum to solve problems as much as possible for myself, but it should be an easy matter to ask them to check that cron issue.

Hello Don,

I could be wrong with the cron as that problem was fixed some time ago, but it may not hurt to check the old forums. If you receive notifications from your Mahara in general, then cron should work. It may then be an RSS-specific issue. Here are the old discussions about RSS feeds not updating:

http://mahara.org/interaction/forum/topic.php?id=362

http://mahara.org/interaction/forum/topic.php?id=861

http://mahara.org/interaction/forum/topic.php?id=2792 (do you get the error message discussed here?)

Cheers

Kristina
