This may already be discussed elewehere but I can not find anything on it.

We would like to allow tutors to make modifications to a view that students had  copied from their group. We are using the Controlled Membership and request Membership group types.

Hello Dirk,

If I understand you correctly, students copy a view from a group into their personal portfolio and then the tutor wants to make modifications to that view?

That is not possible as only the student has ownership of his views.

I added a comment to https://bugs.launchpad.net/mahara/+bug/631189 where view editing in groups has been discussed.

Cheers

Kristina

Hi Kristina,

yes this is what we want to achieve. We actually have several tutors for each group.
Our workflow looks like this: A student copies a view from a group, modifies and develops it further and then submits it to the group for review by several tutors. One tutor leaves a comment and attaches a file to the comment. Another tutor might notice a typo in the submitted view and wants to fix it. This tutor also wants to see the attached file the first tutor added etc. Presently our groups are 300-400 students (one for each grade level in a 9-12 school) and probably about 15 or so tutors per group. It is essential that tutors see each others comments and attachments.

Presently, I am able to achieve this as long as all tutors belong to the site admin group. I don't think I like that as a permanent solution ;) Roles of site staff and below are unable to see files that are submitted as part of a comment feedback.

I am all for collaboration, and I was hoping that a copied view that originated in a group would allow for the ability to choose roles or individuals to co-edit such views. This I think would happen in a non-digital environment too: Teacher prepares a template, hands it to the students, asks them to build on it and then gets it back and writes feedback on it, modifies it a bit, passes it to another teacher or student and then hands it back to the student. During this process, I think it is crucial that the teacher, or tutor controls who can modify, be it the entire group, other tutors only, tutors and select group members or even outside persons. Being able to allow for editing and the setting of access rights on a view that a tutor or group admin supplied in the first place is something of value to me. Without this possibilty, the question of what the value of a shared/copyable group view is as it reduces this sharing to a mere passing of data from one user to another which could be handled more efficiently in the first place.

I think the fuctionality is kind of there already and that is realy nice to see. For it to function properly, I think the following need to be looked at http://mahara.org/interaction/forum/topic.php?id=2377  and here https://bugs.launchpad.net/mahara/+bug/631189 and http://mahara.org/interaction/forum/topic.php?id=2361

Unless I am missing something and maybe our workflow is not the way to go, and that is entirely possible :) I think collaboration on views right now can only happen by either everybody in a group where everyone can do everything to every view or not at all.

Thanks,

Dirk
