Goals for COMS-102/MATE-120
1. Remove "um" and any other related word from my vocabulary.
2. Be able to give a speech with limited pausing.
3. Be able to almost completely follow the speech outlines that I create for my speeches (so that I stay on task and communicate all the information I need to).
4. Build a solar water heater.
Conclusions for COMS-102/MATE-120
1. While my filler language has not been completely evicted from my language, I believe it has decreased in frequency of use and will continue to do so as I give more public speeches.
2. For most of the speeches I made this quarter, I did with a full-sentence outline. This habit retarded my public speaking development. I still pause, but, like my use of "um," I do not do so as much as I used to. This quarter has helped me to gain some confidence in front of an audience.
3. I was able to successfully stick to my outlines and, in most speeches, communicate everything I needed to.
4. Our group built a solar water heater.
Mind Map Relection
Making my mind map turned out to be constructive exercise. While I did not include each topic and practically eliminated a whole branch, this outline roughly corresponded to the subjects of my informative speech. Doing this mind map helped me get an idea of where my speech was going and what I would say. It's a good place to start and I don't doubt that I'll be using it in the future.
