Best way for online discussion
21 December 2008, 2:32 PM
I am intending to use Mahara with a grad class in the Jan-Apr. semester coming up.
What I envision is providing a discussion "Stem" i.e. question and related reading concerning Scholarship in teaching. We discuss this online in some sort of thread for a week. Then the following week we do a followup summary session with Elluminate (or such).
Will Mahara allow me to keep track of a threaded discussion easily, let's say as in Blackboard, or perhaps Moodle?
I do have access to Moodle and it will be a co login for participants.
These discussions will hopefully make their way into the actual portfolio that particpants design.
Any suggestions are welcome.

Of course I just realized there are the forums like this one that allow for some post and reply.
Hmmm.... is there a way to collect the forum postings for reference other than copy/paste each one?

Sadly no, forum posts and discussions are not artefacts. Though we would very much like them to be! Future work perhaps.
Forums were implemented before the new concept of "group" artefacts in Mahara 1.1, which is why they're not artefacts.

Ok thanks Nigel.
So perhaps I should set them up in Moodle and let them go back and forth as need.
Any suggestion in that regard?
22 December 2008, 6:13 AMMoodle 2.0 provides a way to send data such as forum posts and discussions to Mahara as files, which would be interesting for your use case - but there's no way you should be using Moodle 2 in a production system. On the other hand, at least in time the ability will be there

I am not quite sure what you mean by 'for reference', but the forums in Mahara are threaded, as you'd expect, and you can create a group with your students and have as many forums as you wish. The discussions will stay within the group and you can lock that group down to invited members only if you choose. Referencing the discussion should be quite easy within that space.

I don't know if this is useful for what you are trying to achieve, but you can link a discussion thread to a 'view' using the 'text box' feature and this will allow you to contextualise the conversation as well.

I will be using Mahara this fall again with graduate students and faculty as well as undergrads. Trying to do this all on a shoestring budget is not so easy.
Thanks Hasmeeta for the suggestion on linking.
Sorry for the very late response :)
