I realize your post is several months old, but if you are still interested in installing Mahara on HostGator we can help you.

I have several Mahara sites running on HostGator Shared Hosting:

linx  Ver. 15.04.03

dsde  Ver. 15.10.0

There are some very specific details that need to be set to make Mahara work on shared hosting and they are:

• Directory and file permissions
• Location of the data directory
• A php.ini file
• A .htaccess file addressing the presents of a php.ini

In most cases we have found that loading a pre-configured copy of Mahara supplied by a software provider is counter-productive because these versions are usually non-upgradeable and limit you to the options they want you to have.

We always suggest you install any software totally from scratch and configure it yourself, it might be a little more complicated but in most cases the end results are much better.
