Can't add external feeds

We're runningMahara version 1.1.3 (2009022610) and when we try to add an external RSS feed to the block, we get:
The feed appears to be invalid. The error reported was: Invalid input: this is not valid XML
This occurs for any feed, atom or RSS, which we know are valid and work elsewhere.

Hi, a few suggestions,
- When you add a feed, what messages end up in the apache error log for your Mahara?
- What feeds have you tried? Could you link to one so we could try it?
- Are you firewalling outbound connections on port 80?

The alternative feed doesn't work: http://joss.blogs.lincoln.ac.uk/?feed=rss2
This site actually points to a FeedBurner feed.
However, http://tags.blogs.lincoln.ac.uk/feed also fails and this is not pointing to a FeedBurner feed.
However, this feed does work:
http://newsrss.bbc.co.uk/rss/newsonline_uk_edition/front_page/rss.xml
and so does this: http://scobleizer.com/feed/
The machine that Mahara is on, is also used for a variety of other applications, include WordPress and outbound RSS fetching works fine on other applications.
It's a new Mahara install with LDAP authentication and the recent https patches applied.

Hi - I managed to duplicate your experience with those testing feeds. I noted that the feed validator did make some recommendations about your feed, e.g.:

I don't know that much about the internals of Mahara's RSS/Atom parser (it's a third-party library), so maybe it's something about those that is causing the issue?
In any event, it's probably worth filing a bug report with your findings, so we can investigate it in more detail.

Thanks. I've filed a bug report and also fixed the warnings that the validator gave so my feed now validates without any warnings. However, it's still not being accepted by the external feed block. I wondered whether it's cached the older feed with warnings and isn't seeing my updated version yet. I guess we'll see over the next 24 hrs.

Running Mahara version 1.1.3 (2009022610) on a centos 5.3 box running PHp 5.2.11 and PSQL 8.1.11
We're noticing similar error messages in our logs, however, additional errors listed below urge me to check here before I add to the bug report.

Hi - those errors are noise that seems to be caused by the RSS parser in its normal execution. We should really silence them. Have you had any problems with certain feeds not being accepted by the RSS parser?

Feeds all seem to be working correctly. Although, still waiting for feedback from site admin.
It may not be what is causing our problem. Noticed additonal errrors in todays log. I'm told apache is regularly falling over and takes around 10mins to come back online. The following tail of the error log shows some other things going on.

Hi. All the cron stuff is pretty standard, though I don't know why your cron is logging to that log. Maybe the cron job is set up to use a web browser to hit that page? Personally, I'd log cron elsewhere.
There's a couple of XMLRPC related warnings in there, but if your SSO is working then I wouldn't be too concerned by them. If single sign-out isn't working properly and you're happy with us getting access to your system, then we could look at that. But if that error only happened once then it's not worth looking into.
