In the 1.2.0alpha1 release notes it says *** THERE IS NO UPGRADE PATH TO THIS RELEASE ***. And we are able to upgrade to it !

When the new stable release in 1.2 branch is expected ? (Approximately).

It will have the upgrade path ?

Hi. That text serves as what I would informally call "ass-covering" , for two reasons:

1. We have not tested upgrading from the 1.1 stable code to 1.2 yet. Which means we can't say for sure whether it will work in all cases.
2. Even if you do upgrade, we will not support people running Mahara 1.2 yet. It's alpha, we haven't even started accepting bug reports for it. 

In time, once we are finished with the new work that is going into 1.2 (see the Roadmap for more information), we will begin to stabilise it, do bug fixing and test the upgrade path. You will be able to upgrade from 1.1 to 1.2 when it's released, and we will support you if you have issues doing that.

As for when it's going to be released - I hope around the middle of the year. Though we're still in alpha and there's still a lot of work to do. We're working as hard as we can though, we'll keep you updated as future alphas are released!
