Upgrade to v1.1.0 not actually doing anything
20 April 2009, 16:44
I'm attempting to upgrade our test site from v1.0.9 to v1.1.2 in a LAMP environment. The upgrade kept failing the direct v1.1.2 upgrade, so I've backed off and am attemping the intermediate point installs instead.
The upgrade from v1.0.9 to v1.0.10 worked fine.
The upgrade from v1.0.10 to v1.1.0 stalls on the the admin/upgrade.php page. The page displays, but it appears that the upgrade doesn't actually run -- there are no checkmark messages in the Information column, and no "success" message. A quick look at the usr table shows that the lastlastlogin field has not been created (which I've learned from other forum postings is supposed to happen in the v1.1.0 upgrade).
There are no errors in either the php.log or the apache log.
Suggestions?

Hi - try using firebug on the upgrade page and seeing if there are any javascript errors that might have occured - they would cause the page to look blank and the upgrade not to be run.22 April 2009, 17:45
No errors showing with Firebug, although looking at the code involved I was struck by the number of references to our custom theme. Based on a comment I read in one of the threads here, I rolled back to v1.0.9 and set the theme back to Default.
Upgrade to v1.0.10 went smoothly -- as it did before.
Upgrade to v1.1.0 failed -- but at least this time it *did* something. I'll post the new failure details in a separate thread.

We are using the Mahara 1.0.9 version right now and want to upgrade to 1.1.3 due to security vulnerability.
However, we are having great trouble about this. We tried to upgrade it 7 to 8 times (Development Environment).
For each try we used the new backup of existing 1.0.9. With every try new backup copy of database and dataroot were used to make sure that Mahara is not half upgraded.
Among them once we succeed. But under my views RSS feed that was existed before is not working and giving the following error (Both IE and Firefox).
Fatal error: Call to undefined function clean_text() in /var/maharadata/smarty/compile/Yaju/%%1F^1FA^1FAA767D%%blocktype%3Aexternalfeed%3Afeed.tpl.php on line 18
After that we tried to upgrade to 1.1.3 many times and no success for that (with clean backup of database and dataroot). We tried all the 1.1.x version and all failed. The upgrade is going nowhere nothing is happening. We got the following error message when we tried to login after upgrade (not done properly).
ePortfolio:Site Unavailable
A nonrecoverable error occurred. This probably means you have encountered a bug in the system
Than we tried it to upgrade to 1.0.11 and was successful. Everything is working fine. Even we are able to upgrade it to the 1.2.0alpha1. In both of these upgrades we have a stable system. With the same environment we are not able to upgrade to any of the 1.1.x.
So, we can conclude that something is going wrong with 1.1.x upgrade. Kindly guide about this. For temporary we are moving to 1.0.11 due to security risks.

Hi Yaju,
That error you posted looks like it's coming from the smarty cache -- there are no calls to clean_text() in 1.1. You could try deleting everything out of /var/maharadata/smarty/compile and then loading the page again. We actually have a bug report to clear the cache on every upgrade:
https://eduforge.org/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=3193&group_id=176&atid=739
I'm sorry we haven't got this done yet.
When your upgrade to 1.1.x fails, there should be an error in the apache log. If you could post those errors up here we will have a better idea of what to look for. It's a good idea to stay on 1.0.11 until the problem is fixed.

By removing the /var/maharadata/smarty/compile the upgrade process from 1.0.9 to 1.1.3 works very smoothly and able to see the view.
But now not able to create a view. The error message is

What can be the problem?
29 April 2009, 1:43
When you try to see the Group tab it display following error. (Apache logs above shows error about this also)ERROR - something bad happened after headers have been sent. Check the error log for more information.
29 April 2009, 1:56
Someone else had a similar problem recently, and it turned out to be caused by extra whitespace at the end of a file in a language pack (after the end php tag I think):
http://mahara.org/interaction/forum/topic.php?id=451
Have any customised your site at all, or is it a plain Mahara install?
29 April 2009, 2:03
The upgrade looks okay now, I think this may be where the problem starts:
[Thu Apr 30 00:36:01 2009] [error] [client 192.168.92.1] [WAR] c4 (lib/user.php:453) Invalid user passed to display_name, referer: http://yaju-desktop/113/view/
Did this happen as soon as you clicked on the Create View button? It looks from the trace as if the errors are from the My groups page.
