Hi folks

I'm not able to upgrade Mahara 1.0.10 to 1.1.2. All earlier upgrades e.g. 1.0.6  to 1.0.7 to 1.0.10 have gone fine. I have switched to the default theme before the upgrade. We have customised things to include a continuous professional development (CPD) log as a resume artifact, but should have spliced in the appropriate code and files to allow the update of this (this has worked for previous upgrades)

In order to do the update, I'm trying to log in as admin via SSO from Moodle (this has worked for previous updates). However, the login to Mahara fails. If I go directly to /admin/ugrade.php, I see the Web page table listing the components to be upgraded - but nothing happens  :-(

Using CentOS 5,  PHP 5.2.9, PostgreSQL 8.1.11. Apache error log below. Note I have edited the client IP address to ww.xx.yy.zz and replaced passwords as **password**

Any pointers gratefully received. Suspect I'm doing something daft.

Hi Geoff - For some upgrades of Mahara, you can't be logged in when you try them, as things may have changed in the login code or in other code around the site once you're logged in. The upgrade to 1.1 is an example of where this happened.

What you should do is put the new code in place, then hit admin/upgrade.php directly - without being logged in. The upgrade should run for you then. After that, you should be able to log in and continue normally.

From this and phpPgAdmin, I see the 'usr' table of my 1.0.10 install (the one I'm trying to upgrade) is missing a 'lastlastlogin' field compared to a fresh test install of 1.1.2. Is this anything to do with the problem?

Hi - the system may still think you are logged in. You may want to try clearing your cookies, then hitting the homepage. You should be logged out, and a banner should appear inviting you to run the upgrade.

If that doesn't work, you might have to roll back to your old code and start the upgrade again from scratch, just in case something has become messed up.

BTW - the upgrade to 1.1 adds the lastlastlogin column, which is why it's not in 1.0.10 . Because that column was added, and it's used in the online users sideblock, that's why you can't be logged in when you try the upgrade, otherwise there will be a query that tries to grab data from that column when it doesn't exist yet.

Hmm... I have been clearing cookies, sessions and browser cache as a matter or routine. So I'm not sure what is going on here. As you suggest, I'll try rolling back to older code and re-running the upgrade.

If all else fails, would it be daft to add the lastlastlogin column to the usr table using phpPgAdmin and try to progress the upgrade from there? Would I then have to comment out (or tweak) something to stop the upgrade script from attempting to add the lastlastlogin column again - or would this sort itself out!

This is well frustrating, as I really want our users to have a play with the new 1.1.x social features and view templates. For what it's worth, I also think the proposed features in the RoadMap are absolutely spot on and look forward to new Mahara releases. Keep up the good work!

Hi - I guess if all else fails, adding that column manually may work, as long as you add it with exactly the same definition. I think the upgrader will gracefully ignore it in that case. But that would be wandering slightly into uncharted waters, so I don't know for sure what will happen.

If everything else fails, and your site is available publicly, then with your permission I could have a look at it myself (which would potentially involve logging on to your servers), to see if I can spot the issue. That is a route that is quite likely to get a solution, at least

Yes, I was 'gearing up' to give you access but have now managed to get the upgrade  to the new 1.1.3 release (via 1.0.11)  to work

Not entirely sure whether I did anything different or if there are some fixes in the new versions.

Anyway, really looking forward getting stuck into our new Mahara.
