This is to update everyone on my progress. I deleted mahara from the server and dropped the database and reuploaded everything. The path included the htdocs directory, which made a significant difference! It actually worked!!! Well, the server is still not doing right with the htaccess file. When I uncomment register globals, it gives me the old 'file-not-found' issue. While it's not ready for primetime yet, I can at least do some things and explore.

Can anyone think why the server is not obeying the htaccess rules? mod_rewrite is installed and working as far as I know. The domain is not attached to the webspace where the program is held, so the DNS numbers are not updated. Is that the reason? Can anyone tell me?

There's a setting in Apache for turning .htaccess files ON and OFF. Maybe they are not enabled in your web server?
