use of a "Powered by Mahara" image

Are there any requirements or restrictions on the use of the Mahara logo on a Mahara install. We would probably want to use a "Powered by Mahara" image similar to the one used on http://myportfolio.ac.nz
e.g. http://myportfolio.ac.nz/theme/myportfolio-ac-nz/static/images/PoweredbyMahara_logo.gif
If Mahara owns this image can, it be used on a Mahara install

Hi - great to hear you want to use it!
From Mahara 1.0.9 (and possibly before), we started bundling that very image with Mahara itself, in the footer. It also comes with a message that says if your site is not showing it, we won't give you support on the Mahara forums. So yes, you certainly may use it!
Just like with any other Mahara image, use should be governed by common sense. E.g. it shouldn't be used to sell Mahara services or for other commercial reasons, if you're not a Mahara partner. But you're most welcome to use it to spread the word, and in slides and presentations etc.

We will be glad to use the Mahara Logo or Powered by Mahara logo to match our existing theme. It requires some alteration in graphics. Can we do that ? We are non-profit educational organization. Thanks.

Sure! We have no problem with modifying it to match your theme, providing it doesn't get much smaller or harder to read.
