Dedicated server

I'm starting the configuration of a server on which the owner host a configuration optimal Mahara. I have to decide which Linux distro to use. The problem is the need to enter the library for networking and XMLRPC library to support Moodle MBSTRING (in view of the two platforms integration). Now, as the basic PHP doesn't contain these libraries by default you must use a distro that allows the compilation of the PHP system already installed. They tell me that the distro that allow this compilation are Slakware and Gentoo. Confirmed this point of view or recommend other distro?

Almost all distros allow you to install packages that will provide you with PHP and with extensions like XMLRPC, without requiring a recompile of PHP (which to be honest is a complete hassle).

I would recommend you use a debian based distribution - Debian itself if possible, or failing tha, Ubuntu. You will find it very easy to install the required extensions using these distributions.
