Personalization (Skins/themes)
24 February 2010, 14:25
Hello all. I am really interested in integrating Mahara with our Moodle. I like the ease of use in creating views.
I was wondering if there was a way for students to give a view a "skin/theme". This way a view would look more like a website and give the student an ability to change the skin based on the content and audience.
So a view created to show artefacts of learning about Shakespeare from an English class could have an old style parchment skin, while a student's resume would have a more business skin, and a view created for a video game design project would look green and black for the Xbox fans.
Is it currently possible to create these skins with css and put them in a place for kids to select?

Hi Colin
In the latest version of mahara 1.3 it is possible to select a theme for a view from a drop down box.
There are 6 themes to choose from in the deafault install - these can be customised using css.
To see this working go to http://master.dev.mahara.organd and create a view.
regards
Craig

If you want to try "View Skins" (which may find their way into official Mahara, hopefully in 1.4) you can do it at http://mahara.ledina.org/1.4.0.skin .
Username: test, password: test140test.
Than go to My Portfolio -> My Skins and create your skins. You can set the theme/skin at view creation page...

Hi Gregor, I think that's a great creation and I hope it makes it into official Mahara soon.
Do you have the code/patch available for me to test this on my own server? Are there any admin tools to allow or disallow this for specific groups of users, eg. by institution?

Hi Gregor
Just to say I have tried your latest (1 June) skins code from Gitorious
http://gitorious.org/~anzeljg/mahara/anzeljg-mahara/commits/skin-support
Brilliant!!
Hope this gets into official Mahara 1.4 code soon
Keep up the good work

It's too late to get into 1.4 since we don't add new features to stable releases, but we are planning to add it to 1.5.
Cheers,
Francois

Thanks for kind word.
As Francois mentioned, it will hopefully be in 1.5, but you'll be able to get it as a patch for 1.4 from http://gitorious.org/~anzeljg/mahara/anzeljg-mahara/commits/skin-support
