Hi Nigel,
one minor nitpick with respect to the download page. It states that Mahara is available in Debian, but it's only available in Lenny (testing as of today) and Sid (unstable), but not Etch (current stable). Maybe you could mention this in the page :-)

Good news!
IMHO branching is a very good idea. In Moodle, there are plans to start properly branch language packs as well.
