does anyone have a view on what constitutes a reasonable disc space quota for students on a 1 year course who have to showcase evidence against 33 different standards, bearing in mind that I want them to start using rich media evidence rather than just electronic copies of their paper files.  As a minimum they would need to upload 3 documents against each standard.  This of course is only the use that I want them to make.  to make effective use of mahara they are going to create views of their own and join other communities.

Give them all a gigabyte each, and inform them of how to get their quota raised if they need to (e.g. by contacting the site admin).

You won't actually need to provide a gigabyte of storage per user, as many of them won't use that much. But it's a nice big upper limit to get you started. See this article on the wiki for more:
