What are "institutions" for?

I support the end user, and I'm working on documentation that will highlight the new features in version 1.5. I keep seeing updates that relate to a Mahara installation that utilizes multiple "institutions," but I don't undertand what that function is for.

I know we only have one "institution" in our instance of Mahara... but I don't think anyone really knows why... or in what scenario we might want more than one "institution."

Can you explain, in simple terms, what this function is for?

Thank you!

Hi Sean,
Institutions is to support learning communities that comprise of multiple separate entities. Each can have their own theme and a level of administration. A powerful examples is www.myportfolio.school.nz which is a single installation of Mahara with over 1,000 schools and many tens of thousands of learners - in essence a pan-sector e-portfolio service.

kind regards
Richard

Hello Sean,

In addition to what Richard wrote, you are welcome to link your user guide on https://wiki.mahara.org/User_Guide/Tutorials_about_Mahara if it is available openly.

Cheers

Kristina

Sure, I'd be happy to post this for the community once it's complete.
