From Marion MacDonald at the University of the Highlands and Islands, who has been using Mahara for many years, comes this announcement for a free webinar next week:
LTA Connect: Graduate Attributes Portfolio
19/08/2021 1200 – 1300
Session outline
Ms Lizzie Hall M.Ed(dist), BSc, FHEA will use this one hour webinar to share
her research which led to the development of the Graduate Attributes Portfolio
assessment which was introduced to the BSc Oral Health Sciences programme in
September 2020. Lizzie will discuss the development and introduction of the
graduate attributes portfolio along with the benefits and challenges they have
experience since its roll out. Whilst this portfolio is specific for the Oral
Health Sciences course, this webinar is open to all as this could easily be
adapted to other programmes to provide similar benefits.
As part of Lizzie's recent UHI MEd course she completed qualitative research
investigating the student’s perspective of graduate attributes. Lizzie
conducted focus groups with all 3 years of the BSc Oral Health Sciences course
to assess how much the knew about the concept of graduate attributes. Lizzie
was also interested in their awareness of how the course on which they are
enrolled helps develop and assess their attainment of them. Results showed that
whilst students are aware of what graduate attributes are, they struggle to see
how teaching methods develop them and they do not find the current assessment
helpful. This research led to the development of the Graduate Attributes
Portfolio assessment which was introduced to the BSc Oral Health Sciences
programme in September 2020. This longitudinal assessment encourages students
to reflect on their development throughout their time as a student and provide
evidence of how they are working to achieve them. Students review their
portfolios with their personal academic tutor at regular intervals providing
the opportunity for feedback. In this webinar Lizzie will discuss the
development and introduction of the graduate attributes portfolio along with
the benefits and challenges we have experience since its roll out. Whilst this
portfolio is specific for the Oral Health Sciences course, it could easily be
adapted to other programmes to provide similar benefits.

Presenter
Ms Lizzie Hall M.Ed(dist), BSc, FHEA. Graduated from the University of Dundee
with a BSc in Oral Health Sciences in 2010 and completed an M.Ed in Teaching
and learning in Higher Education in 2020. Lizzie has worked as a dental
therapist in NHS primary care for over 10 years providing dental care to a wide
variety of patients. Lizzie moved to Stornoway in 2011 to work for NHS Western
Isles and UHI in the delivery of their own BSc Oral Health Sciences course. She
is the module leader for 2 undergraduate modules as well as providing practical
teaching in the Western Isles dental centre. Most recently, Lizzie has been
involved in the development of the new MSc Oral Health sciences. Her interest
in graduate attributes stems from working with final year students to prepare
them for the workplace. Whilst their clinical skills are assured by the end of
their education, like most graduates they find it difficult to present
themselves well with regards to general employability skills. Lizzie's aim is
to produce a well-rounded graduate who is able to excel across all the career
options available to them.
