Mahara.org is the hub for community discussions and not so much for creating portfolios. We do not have the capacity to offer hotline support for users who need things figured out immediately in order to turn in their assignments. That's why a number of features are not turned on here on the site and users also only have 5 MB of space available. The site functions more as a discussion site rather than a site for keeping portfolios.
Skins are enabled on the demo site.

I was just wondering when Skins might make it as an enabled feature here on Mahara.org? Much easier to promote the use of the feature (and persuade site admins to switch it on) if it's showcased in the community site. As has been said before - eating our own dogfood will persuade others that it's a good thing.

Not sure how to add my zip file into the wiki. Is there a guide somewhere?

]]>The reason we required the uploading of font files in order to use web fonts like Google's fonts, was to have the font file on the server so that it can be used by PHP when generating the skin preview thumbnails. ImageMagick has to have a local copy of the font in order to use it to generate text in an image.
On the other hand, it has occurred to me since then, that one way around this might be to simply use the PHP curl library to fetch a local copy of the font directly from the font host server.
If we wanted to open this up to end-users, we could include a "legal webfont domains" list, much like the legal iframes domains list.

]]>I've created a public page on Mahara.org and added my skins as zip files (hopefully getting around xml restrictions) https://mahara.org/user/gordonmc/my-shared-mahara-skins
I'll update the wiki next so we've got a single place to see everyone's work.
Thanks, Gordon.
]]>Just some precaution: the dev server is a development server and thus content is not guaranteed to stay there. We can erase everything without letting anyone know. I'll see what we can come up with.

Good question. XML is probably not allowed due to security. I'll talk with Aaron to see whether we are going to allow it or whether it would be best to place the skins elsewhere.
Sorry that I hadn't checked that before. You could go with Wullie's suggestion though to put it on a different Mahara site. I would not link it to the master.dev site though because that is a development server and content can be removed at any time.

Just wanted to check how we upload the skin xml to the wiki as it only seems to allow image files as attachments.

]]>The Mahara page skins competition voting attracted 50 votes altogether, and our winners have been determined by those who voted over the last few days. The competition was a very close one. We are happy to announce the three winners:
The first prize, a T-shirt of his choice, goes to Wullie Mair for his skin "Student workspaces".
Dirk Meyer ("Coffee beans (default theme)") and Gordon McLeod ("Fangorn") both came in second and receive a Mahara mug of their choice each.
The winners will upload their skins in the next few days to the wiki so you can start using these winning designs in your own Mahara 1.8 instance.
Check out the results for yourself.
Congratulations!
Kristina

I wonder if it could be possible by not having to upload fonts. Google fonts can be used by just embedding a link from the site as can some other fonts online. So why would need to upload fonts altogether? I assume it's because not all fonts can be used straight from the web. But for those where that is possible, we could use that functionality instead of the required upload.
It would then be easier for users to continue the fonts they have chosen. Maybe many will look for Google fonts anyway? We could offer to allow the continued use of those fonts then and not the upload.
The upload also poses the problem that if a user incorrectly uploaded a non-free font, Mahara would be distributing it and breach copyright.
I also noticed that not all fonts have a license file, but that is required for uploading non Google fonts. Gregor: Where do you usually find this file or what should be included? I think site admins would need a bit of help there.
Happy to create bugs once we know what would need to / could be looked into.
