There are two apps available: MaharaDroid for Android and PortfolioUp for iOS. Please see http://manual.mahara.org/en/1.8/misc/mobile.html for more information.
You can use Mahara also natively without an app on a mobile device and browse the site / upload content just in your browser.

my question may seem out-of-context, but as I have not used mahara with any mobile device and we are only now considering using mahara with tablets and ipads at our university with our students I would need your advice. Are there any applications avaliable for tablets/ipads and if yes, which are the ones that you recommend?
Thanks, Helga
]]>One of our testers tested this for me and indeed, uploaded videos do not have an extension coming along. Neither do photos for that matter, but they are recognized.
Interestingly, when you upload a mov file from the iPad without going through PortfolioUp, our tester could embed that successfully into a page. Thus, it's not the iPad file - Mahara connection, but rather PortfolioUp I suspect.
Since the code of PortfolioUp is not open source, the PortfolioUp developers would need to check it out and see if they can make adjustments. But maybe there can already be made adjustments in Mahara so that it does recognize the video file if appropriate information about the file is passed along. A developer would need to look into that.
I created a bug at https://bugs.launchpad.net/mahara/+bug/1165657

]]>Donations are welcome. We do have an iPad in the office, but I'm afraid I forget that frequently as I'm not on the same floor. I'll try to remember next week and see if I can download PortfolioUp.
You write that files previously uploaded with PortfolioUp worked. Was that with the same version of PortfolioUp? I guess it was on your old Mahara install, right?
The file you gave me access to, is that the file you uploaded via PortfolioUp? I do see it embedded and it does play.

I think it's time someone at Mahara Org bought you an iPad ;)
Here is something odd - I embedded the file to a page I created in my profile on this site and the video plays as expected. I will share the page with you so you can see the file if you want to.
However, when i try the same thing on our site, the file does not appear in the list of files which can be embedded.
And yet, files I uploaded previously with PortfolioUp do play. I'm really not sure what's going on but it seems it might be us.

Richard
In this image the highlighted ones are the ones not recognised as video files. perhaps some setting somewhere that I have missed or set incorrectly.
]]>Quicktime files are .mov files. When I upload a mov file from the computer and had previously allowed the embedding of Quicktime files, the file format is recognized. There are two possibilities as far as I see:
Could you maybe please send me a test file from your iPad via mail?
Cheers
Kristina
]]>We have used PortfolioUp to upload files successfully from the photo app in iPad but Mahara does not recognise the file as a movie. I did enable QuickTime in the file\internalmedia section of the admin but still won't go into the embed block - not listed as a file you can embed.
if you click it in the files area it does play in the browser.
Does Mahara support .mov, it is not explicitly listed?
Thanks
Richard
]]>Yes, please file a bug for not being able to delete a block when device detection is turned off. That should be possible then because the site should then behave as if you were viewing it on a laptop or desktop computer.
As for a timeline for iOS and Mahara: We do not have a specific timeline for individual fixes. Depending on the priority and severity of bugs, they are implemented quickly or pushed back. Thus, for example, if multiple people support your bug, it will be pushed higher in the priority list and gets attention faster if we don't already classify as high priority from the start.
I'm afraid I can't give you any information on PortfolioUp as that is created by a different developer team.
It would help us very much to see what does and what doesn't work on an iPad for regular users of it. For starters, we could then complete the table at http://manual.mahara.org/en/1.6/misc/mobile.html#new-in-mahara-1-6-mobile-browsing and find other issues that might be addressed at the same time as the deleting one.

]]>You cannot delete blocks with device detection on or off. Should I file a bug report?
What is the status of work on iOS and Mahara? Can we expect fixes in the near future?
I would hate to see us change to another system but we might have to if there is no timeline for these issues to be resolved.

]]>You can use Mahara with the iPad - although not to upload files.
PortfolioUp still seems to work OK in 1.6. This can be used to upload photos and videos either "live" or stored in the photo library.
If you want to use the rich text editor you need to switch off the mobile device detection under user settings.

]]>we are having exactly same issue as you have got,
there is an free app called PortfolioUp that I couldn't get it work,
I will wait for new release from mahara
]]>Thanks for your reasoning for improving mobile access for Mahara. Currently, we are working on a responsive design for Mahara that should come out with 1.6 in October. I assume that you are an iPad owner. Soon (possibly next week), we'll have the first release candidate available for testing the upcoming 1.6 and it would be fantastic if you participated in the testing of it on your iPad to see how it performs there. There is no separate app to install, but it is changes to the theme that adjust to the width of your device and thus also sometimes you won't have the entire range of functions available if they aren't possible to be performed or if they do not make sense to have on a mobile device, e.g. administering a Mahara site on a mobile phone. We will update http://master.dev.mahara.org with the Release Candidate so that you have an install ready for testing.

]]>1) In academic settings iOS is increasingly common (especially as the iPad has been embraced by educators).
2) Evidence has to be easy to get into a portfolio for it to be even remotely useful. For learners on the go, finding a computer to log into is a barrier to getting artifacts into the portfolio. The smartphone and tablet are key to easily getting artifacts into the portfolio.
Please make this a priority!
]]>I never tried uploading of files but placing blocks and writing text into blocks worked for me on 1.5 Curious to see the more detailed write up you are planning.

]]>Forgot to subscribe to this thread somehow, sorry, a little late.
The main issue is that the html editor does not work so you just get a plain text box. A secondary issue is that there are no scroll bars and no way to expand the editor window.
(I tried to upload a screenshot here but it wouldn't work).
The document I supplied gives some hints on working with the iPad and works for iOS version 5. I haven't tried it on the iPhone or iPod Touch but I don't imagine it would be a great user experience.
Possibly I could expand that document to explain how to reference an uploaded image within a text box and any other features iPad users "must have" - paragraph alignment, tables - let me know.
I also haven't upgraded to Mahara 1.5 yet but will add that to our test install, probably this week.
Cheers

]]>Mobile Safari does not facilitate access to the local filesystem.
Moodle has a web version and an app fr this very reason The mobile web version will reformat moodle for te mobile device and display it well, but cant allow file transfer.
The mobile app (i'll talk the official one to make it easier for now) facilitates file transfer of audio or video recorded on the local hardware and still uses the web version to display.
Android of course has the same issues. All we need is someone with skills or funding to convert MaharaDroid to iOS :)

]]>Earlier there was the information that the page editor of selecting blocks and then clicking on a box to place them on a page doesn't work in iOS 5 anymore. Are you using an older version of iOS then?
What are the issues that you do encounter?
