Hello! You are looking at an archived forum discussion from the old mahara.org website. You cannot reply to this topic, but if you wish to discuss it, you can sign up to mahara.org and ask about this in the new forums.

I'm new to Mahara and interested in using parts of it on our LAN. We have an instance installed that I've been playing with. So far I don't see any search function for the blogging areas. I'd like to use an extended blog as a FAQ area and would like to have a search function to find specific entries. Am I missing something or am I wanting Mahara to do something it's not designed for?

I'd also like to install a forum area similar to the one that this Discussion area is part of. However, I don't see that in Mahara either. Again, am I missing something?

Any info would be much appreciated.

Thanks much,

Currently searching in

Currently searching in Mahara isn't the best... you can search for your own stuff, but only for other users and groups - not other content.

To get forums, you create a group. Groups can have forums. In your case, what I would do is create a group for all members of your community to join, and run forums in there. Also, you could create Views as your FAQ and submit them to the group so that group members can see them - or in 1.1, simply make the views as part of the group itself.

Will give it a try. THanks

It's worth noting we added a couple of nice new features to Mahara recently that'll be in 1.1 and help you here - the first is the ability for admins to specify that users are automatically joined to a group when the user account is created, and the second is the ability to auto-subscribe users to forums when they join a group.
